People assumed you and your bandmates were into hard drugs, but you say you were strait-laced. We actually got an apartment up here shortly after. It's hilarious, we got a place down on the lower East Side, on the Bowery, and now -- it's still the Bowery but it's kinda swanky!
The place was about 0 a month and I had two roommates, and one of 'em slept in the kitchen and the other one, my friend Tracy, shared the bedroom with me. Leon was from New York and had played in punk bands, so there were these, like, crazy -- they weren't called gutter punks back then, but I'd call them the equivalent of gutter punks -- climbing up our fire escape and banging on the windows at all hours of the day and night, just for somewhere to crash.
We basically moved in together that night and were never apart for seven years. I had a really, really nasty apartment on Delancey and Clinton.
It was on the fourth floor, walkup, facing the Williamsburg Bridge.
It's a collage of photos, flyers, ticket stubs and backstage passes -- even the occasional pair of her flame-emblazoned shorts."I have so many friends who've been in bands and they're like, 'God, I was just so high or I was so drunk, I didn't keep any of that s---. She was not just "the only girl in the band, but also the only girl in a huge boys' club," she writes.
"A big, sweaty, long-haired, denim and leather, moshing boy's club."An insider and, at times, an outsider, she brings a fresh eye to those sweaty years, starting when she met Zombie at Parsons School of Design in the '80s to when the band broke up around 1996 and her romance with Zombie had fallen apart.
Asked what her reaction was when she first found out former WHITE ZOMBIE frontman Rob Zombie was pursuing a solo career after the band's 1997 split, Sean said: "First of all, I knew that we were breaking up — it wasn't a big surprise — but it was a little bit of a slap in the face to me and Jay [Yuenger, former WHITE ZOMBIE guitarist] when we had our… "It seems like that those songs just seem now old to people and it's very strange." He added, "Everybody likes to make up stories which aren't true. Ivan left the band, John Tempesta came in and the band sounded better than ever, we kept playing and made bigger records and did more tours, so I don't see how that had anything to do with it." Yuenger admitted to Crawdaddy!
After one year, we were supposed to be taking a break, and then we were gonna have a call and talk about getting back together and making a record. [Laughs] Even though our manager told Jay and I that we should go on and continue on with WHITE ZOMBIE and get a new singer, we both refused that. back in 2010 that he still harbored some resentment over WHITE ZOMBIE's demise. They're no longer 15 and they're gonna come to the concert at 40 and look at White Zombie, who are all gonna be 50, and go, ' This sucks now.' I mean, they forget that time marched on and changed. I mean, a lot of people forget, because they went to see White Zombie and they were 15 years old and it was their first concert and everybody in White Zombie was, like, 23 years old.Recent shows include exhibitions in New Orleans, North Carolina and Paris as well as CBGB's 315 gallery in NYC to benefit the ailing nightclub.Yseult has also been a member of The Rawk Show – Fine Art by Musicians, in Texas. There was one sink, in the bathroom, and it was colored in every color of hair dye from everybody coming over and dyeing their hair at our place. When we started off on the lower East Side, playing CBGB, we played with lots of girls back then. But about '89, '90, we started playing over in Brooklyn with more metal bands. I would get stopped by the clubs and by local security trying to throw me out or trying to get me out of backstage. There was another night I stayed out drinking till 6 in the morning with Robin Zander. He hasn't spoken to any of us in the band since the day we broke up. As soon as you're not in his world, you're out of his world. No hard feelings at all, but that's just how he is.
